Also like, transit doesn’t need to make a profit, it creates money by allowing people to move easier. We dump hundreds of billions into the interstates and they have never made a singe cent of money back for us because we know the money created by allowing for the movement of individuals outweighs the money spent

determinate-negation:

unfortunate that the united states has been very successful at controlling narratives around word war 2 and positioning itself as the polar opposite of nazism and the main force fighting fascism when america was complicit in the holocaust. not only did american press report positively about hitler and the nazi party up until the end of the 30′s, some publications cooperated with nazi germany, american companies had investments and connections to nazi germany that they maintained until american involvement in the war, and companies like ibm in particular gave nazis the technology necessary to make the holocaust possible in the first place. some company owners themselves had nazi sympathies like henry ford and others just saw it as a business opportunity. the us denied entry to european jewish refugees and deported jewish refugees back to germany, many senators and other government officials during the 1930s openly supported nazism and worked to prevent the us from taking a side in ww2, and during the 30s large pro nazi rallies were held across the us. american eugenics movement, american race laws and american genocide set the model for the holocaust and there shouldnt be any discussion of nazism and the holocaust without also discussing the extent of american complicity in it.

anyways heres some material on it

The oldest living tree ever found was a pine named “Prometheus.” It had been alive since before the Egyptian pyramids were built. Some guy cut it down in 1964. Source

he was actually a forestry graduate student who was doing research on bristlecone pines (Pinus langaevea) and got his increment borer stuck in the tree. this tool costs almost $800, so he asked the forest service if he could cut down the tree to recover the tool. after cutting it down, it became apparent that the tree was actually the oldest living organism. ever. (around 8,000 years old). so, not just some asshole. the guy feels extremely guilty and has even broken down in tears during an interview about the accident

OH MY GOD SO LET ME TELL YOU A STORY

So after the grad student cut down the tree and discovered it was the oldest tree in the world he quit studying forestry and went to study salt flats (can’t cut down the oldest trees in the world on salt flats no siree none of that happening) and he was being interviewed about his research, but in the middle of the interview the reporter just stops and says “wait aren’t the guy that…”

And he just takes off running. Literally. Turns around and runs across the salt flats away from the interview and I feel so bad for him but I can’t help but start crying I’m laughing so hard about it
imagine a guy high tailing it across salt flats away from a dude with a recorder

its so different to know it was an accident and that NO ONE was aware until after. its not like this was one ignorant guy cutting down a fucking relic.

I think this is a great example of how things are often phrased in the news and in social media in a way that is calculated to grab your attention and get you riled up.

Anyway, gentle reminder to always dig deeper and ask questions. Reality is often both less angering and much weirder when you look past the headline.

Another reminder that if your system of morality is based solely upon what’s legal and illegal, you have no moral system.

In an ideal society laws exist to protect people and make life easier. We do not live in an ideal society.

I am really happy that other people are getting the word out on sharks.

Everyone is always saying that they are scared of sharks and don’t want to help them.

But, this is a serious issue.

Sharks aren’t he only ones who are affected by the actions of hunting and shark finning, but the entire ecosystem.

So everyone, PLEASE REBLOG!

SAVE OUR SHARKS!

My art touches people, but it is still far from touching the real shark killers.

I will continue, even if it takes my whole life, even if just somewhere in the sea, someone stopped the knife that would cut a shark’s fin, because someone showed my art.

I keep dreaming for the sharks…

Somehow this video captures the scale of whales better than any other video or photo I have ever seen.

That is a humpback. If you think they are huge, I have some news for you…

Me watching this video

Fun fact: the blue whale is the biggest animal to ever live on earth. And they’re alive today.

The biggest isn’t some dinosaur or weird devonian fish, nope. It’s the blue whale, and you share a planet with them. How lucky is that?

Jason Anderson

British artist Jason Anderson creates colorful abstract paintings composed of pixelated swatches of pastel-toned oil paint. Up-close, the artist’s paintings look like blocky layers of shapes and color; but, from afar, his scenes—featuring cityscapes, roads, trains, and marinas—are revealed.

image
image

Anderson began his career as a stained glass apprentice, where he worked on restoring the windows of cathedrals. He soon progressed onto designing the glass murals himself, where he learned how to break down subject matter into “jigsaws” of colored sections. This approach still shines through in his paintings today—complex scenes are brought to life with simple shapes and careful consideration to hue and tone.

This is akin all those hot takes about the 2k bug being an hoax:

“Remember when they told us every computer was going to crash on 1/1/01 and there would be chaos and then nothing happened?”

Yeah, I remember. And I’m sure every programmer and sysadmin that contributed the billion person/hour global effort to prevent it also remembers.

No one talks about acid rain anymore, either. And that’s a very good thing.

see also START and START II, which significantly reduced nuclear stockpiles

International cooperation is actually so effective that most people don’t even notice it happening, and then erroneously believe it can’t solve anything.

Fixing issues before they develop into actual disasters is such an underappreciated thing it hurts at all levels.

We don’t talk about acid rain because there isn’t any more acid rain because when acid rain started happening and we learned that the cause was mainly sulphur oxide and carbon monooxide from car exhausts, countries all over the world made it a law that car companies had to produce cars that produced less exhaust with better effectivenes (burning the fuel all the way to CO2 instead of the halfassed CO) and oil rafineries to remove the sulphur from the gasoline in the first place.

We don’t talk about computers crashing because of the turn of the century, because thousands of programmers worked very hard to write updates and patches for Every Single Program humanity as a whole used back in 1999 and then somehow managed to failtest, distribute, and update every single device and system, be it an online or offline one before the midnight of the 1st january of 2000.

On a much smaller scale, no one ever commenta or notices cleaners and housekeepers doing their job - be it at home or at whole buildings - because they always make sure that there’s nothing to notice. But don’t be fooled - at any point of your life you are one week of them not doing away from swimming in trash and filth with nothing to eat and nothing clean to wear. Only then you would notice.

Now it’s time to do that thing again and make sure that we don’t kill our whole planetary ecosystem within the next century.

image

If someone didn’t post the Goodfellas quote, I would have. I’m related to people who have managed projects very behind the scenes throughout the 20th century, and I’ve heard stories about how much work it took, how many people were involved, the literal blood sweat tears trope.

Be glad there are things you’ve stopped hearing about. This kind of thing is not supposed to be so noticeable in everyday life. People really need to appreciate the watchers, the cleaners, the sanitizers, the keepers, the ones who make sure things work they way they need to.

(Then there’s the ones who called President Johnson “Mr J” in phone calls, for example, who went out looking like Men In Black because that’s essentially what they were.)

angelsaxis:

Idk i think some people miss the point of someone who’s around my age lamenting that they’ve never dated or done anything or been in love, but really want to be. I saw someone who was 24 ask whether there was still hope for them (which I know is kinda dramatic), and the person who responded was like “do you have friends and family who love you and whom you love? Have you ever read a good book or eaten fruit or sat in the sunlight. Love is everyhwere 🥺❤️🥺❤️” and like yeah yeah I get that little love and platonic love is just as important as romantic and sexual love but really none of that changes the fact that that person and many others like them are desiring a specific kind of love under very specific circumstances and conditions. Loving your parents isn’t the same as loving a significant other lol. And idk it feels patronizing or infantilizing I think, to see someone who’s never been in a relationship and would like to experience that kind of bond with someone only to tell them “no actually you should love your friends and family and eat some good food ❤️” idk idk I understand the intentions but. People desire to be desired in specific ways. People want to feel desired sexually and Romantically and to know that they’re wanted in those capacities. Yes it’s not the only metric by which to measure one’s value, but we’re not being unrealistic or naive by desiring this. Yes all the other stuff is important but you would not tell someone who doesn’t have friends not to worry about platonic love bc maybe they have an SO already and also the sun is shining and their parents love them and people are being kind for no reason. it’s starting to get annoying
